The company donated a 2011 Silverado truck to the College’s GM Automotive Service Education Program to support classroom instruction, reports Ted Schafer, assistant professor of automotive technology. This is the first diesel truck provided to the training program at the Western Campus in Parma.
The vehicle offers GM ASEP students hands-on experience working with the Duramax 6.6L diesel engine and related systems. They will learn how to diagnose and service Duramax fuel systems, engine management systems and the advanced after-treatment system.
Through Tri-C’s unique cooperation with General Motors and ACDelco, ASEP trains highly specialized service technicians for GM dealers and ACDelco Total Service Support shops. ASEP labs are equipped with the latest GM technology, including vehicles, components, training aids and technical information. Trained to handle GM’s computer-oriented product line, ASEP students are prepared to keep pace with future technology.
GM ASEP teaches exclusively on current GM products and additionally incorporates advanced automotive technical training with a strong academic foundation of math, reading and electronics, and both analytical and technical skills.
“Donated vehicles are vital to ASEP because they allow students the hands-on experience they need,” said Schafer, ASEP coordinator at Tri-C. “Our program goes beyond the classroom and we couldn’t do it without the ongoing support of GM.”
The company is “proud to support training programs which prepare the next generation of GM technicians,” according to Todd Dawn, GM ASEP and AYES (Automotive Youth Educational Systems) program manager.
Dawn said GM recognizes that its commitment to customers goes well beyond building a quality product. It includes quality service after the sale and ensuring problems are fixed right the first time, which is where Tri-C’s ASEP program comes in.
Tri-C’s GM ASEP program is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) in all eight ASE categories. ASEP graduates work as service technicians in General Motors dealerships, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC or an ACDelco TSS Service Center.
