Attorney General Mike DeWine Shamelessly

6/30/2014, 9:36 p.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the United States Supreme Court reached a decision on Hobby Lobby & Conestoga Wood Specialities Corp. v. Sebelius, deciding in favor of the two companies and as a result allowing for-profit corporations to deny female employees insurance coverage for birth control.

While this is egregious enough, even more outrageous is that Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine once again sacrificed the needs of women for extreme right-wing politics by advocating for the Supreme Court to take up the case in the first place. But that’s not all; DeWine also co-signed a letter to the US Department of Health and Human Services opposing federal law that requires companies to provide women coverage.

Finally, DeWine led the charge against women by co-authoring the amicus-brief on behalf of the most extreme Attorneys General across the nation to argue before the Supreme Court, which ultimately helped lead to birth control requirements being overturned.

“I’m am deeply saddened by DeWine’s efforts since women across Ohio are now susceptible to discrimination in the workplace- and by law can now be denied personal decisions on health care just because their boss says so.” said MOF board member Ronda Kinnamon. “A recent poll shows that mandates to cover birth control are favored 2 to 1, and it’s shameful that Mike DeWine utilized the office of Attorney General to successfully fight against the rights of Ohio women.”

Since another recent poll by Gallup found that an astounding 82 percent of Catholics find birth control “morally acceptable”, the writing is on the wall that Mike DeWine and his extreme positions are out of touch with the majority of Ohioans.

We need an Attorney General that will stand with Ohio's women, not one who utilizes tax dollars to fight against not only our beliefs, but also our health and well-being.
